Youth Industry Vocational Training For Youth At Risk

As a part of a Chevron California Partnership - an initiative that invests in education and economic development in California, six nonprofit organizations received a $1 million grant to support STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - education in schools, offer training in emerging industries and promote economic empowerment.

One of the six nonprofits awarded was The Stride Center: ReliaTech 3.0. The center, headquartered at 1212 Broadway in Oakland, is a social venture, which promotes comprehensive career development programs that include job skills training, credentials, coaching, work experience and job placement assistance.

“You could have knocked me over with a feather,” Ben Delaney, the chief executive officer for ReliaTech, said on how excited he was to find out that they were one of the six recipients. “This is a lot of money. It’s a big deal.”

According to Delaney, this is a grant that is given out every year. The deadline for submission for the grant was Aug. 1 and basically took two nail-biting months of anticipation. However, Delaney said ReliaTech had been working on trying to get this grant since the beginning of the year.

“It is definitely rewarding,” he said. “We are thrilled that we will be helping a lot of people get jobs. We are really emphasizing and want to continue to improve intervention with at-risk youth and increase economic and education opportunities for them.”

ReliaTech, the nonprofit social enterprise of the Stride Center, provides computer repair services, refurbished computers and e-waste recycling.

“These are one-year grants that Chevron distributes in December or January,” Delaney said.  “It will create about 70 jobs in Richmond next year and also help people start their own businesses.”

Among the people who will be future entrepreneurs and receive job training are students from all around the Bay Area. The plan is for students to learn new skills, which will then allow them to achieve their goals and have vibrant careers in the future.

“Our contributions are designed to help people and businesses thrive,” Nigel Hearne, the general manager of Chevron’s Richmond Refinery, said. “When business and nonprofits work together we can ensure better education and jobs for the next generation and a better future for all of our communities.”

The six nonprofit organizations were selected to prepare residents for today’s jobs and youth for the technical jobs of the future, according to California’s Employment Development Department.

The other five nonprofit organizations include: the Chevron West Contra Costa Unified School District Algebra Initiative, the Contra Costa Economic Partnership (Making the Real World STEM Connection), the Contra Costa College Foundation (20/20 Vision for WCCUSD Students), the Catholic Charities of the East Bay (Project Access Mentoring Program) and Solar Richmond (Solar for All Business Initiative).

“We thought we had a good chance winning this grant, but you never know until they cross the t’s and dot the i’s,” Delaney said. “If I take pride anywhere, it is for being able to help people in the planet while also making a profit for other organizations that provide training to help people get jobs.”

On 30 June, a seminar on Youth and Employment was hosted by the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, and jointly organised by the four agencies: Cedefop (the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, Thessaloniki), ETF (the European Training Foundation, Torino), EU-OSHA (the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, Bilbao) and Eurofound (the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, Dublin).

The seminar, which attracted some 200 participants from various institutions and interest groups, was a mix of key note and special addresses, thematic contributions from the four agencies, and a panel debate bringing together members of the European Parliament and Commission services, European social partners and youth organisations.

The agencies highlighted the complementarity of their work by each presenting different aspects and perspectives related to youth employment in Europe and its neighbourhood countries. Topics included the transition from education to the workplace, guidance for young people at risk, safe and decent jobs for young people, the “NEETs” phenomenon (young people Not in Education, Employment or Training) and its economic costs, the active inclusion of disadvantaged young people in employment and the global dimension of youth employment.
