Welcome

Welcome to Society and Learning, a blog written by Ian Sharp to discuss adult education, lifelong learning, and post-compulsory education and training – essentially in the UK, and global perspectives via the comments will be very welcome.

The big issues at the moment, of course, are budget cuts. Actually it feels as if budget cuts have been on the agenda ever since I first became involved as a practitioner in 1987 (following my Open University degree which I took between 81-86) but never as extensively as this. The fear is we are only at the start of this process, even now, yet we cannot and must not act on the basis of fear. So part of the brief I’ve given myself here is to write about the future as we wish it to be – what do people need, indeed what do we want, from our education system?

In the end, is anything more important to any society than education?

As well as the big picture, I’ll be writing about day-to-day events, including my own role … which is currently to be on the outside looking in, and very enthusiastic about finding a post, some sort of a role in any case, on the inside.
